More about Mike
Growing up, Mike Sweeney was always drawn to storytelling and technology — specifically, photography and computers. (His first journalist’s tools were a Kodak 110 Instamatic camera and an Apple IIc computer) Technology and visual communications have significantly shaped his life, education, and work experience.
While in high school, Mike discovered his love of writing when he was invited to be part of the yearbook staff. At community college he enjoyed writing articles and serving as photo editor for the college newspaper. He went on to receive his Bachelor’s from Western Kentucky University, one of the top photography / journalism schools in North America.
After graduating, he spent time living and working in South America as an on-staff writer and photographer for a large daily newspaper. Following that, he worked in West Africa for a non-profit agency focusing on cross-cultural communication and photography.
Having returned to the states, Mike has continued using his writing and communications skills for more than ten years in the financial services industry, with an emphasis on sales. At Bank of America, he was praised for his problem-solving ability and helping people understand complex technical subjects. Most recently, he worked in corporate communications at Washington Trust Bank writing blog articles, special reports, newsletters, emails and producing videos.
Although Mike is a skilled writer, he understands that “writing to sell” in today’s marketing requires additional specialized knowledge. To gain that, he enrolled in several copywriting and business marketing courses offered by AWAI (AWAI is the industry leader in training copywriters).
There Mike has studied advanced business-to-business copywriting techniques (such as writing case studies and white papers) under the guidance of several industry-leading coaches.
With Mike’s training and experience, he knows how to craft a strong story to inform, educate and persuade. However, to advance these skills even further he also worked under the mentorship of Chris Marlow, an award-winning marketing coach who has over twenty years of experience in the areas of technology and direct marketing.
As a business-to-business technology and financial services copywriter, Mike’s skill and passion for clear marketing communication can help businesses generate more qualified leads, improve their existing marketing materials and increase their ROI. Because of his background in photography, Mike is also able to work with branding, conception and creative direction.
When not writing copy and solving marketing challenges, Mike enjoys spending time with his family, tinkering with Linux operating systems and designing websites. Other favorite hobbies include photography, hiking, and travel.
